There’s something magical about the smell of fresh bread baking in the oven. Buttermilk and honey bread is a delightful treat. It’s soft, sweet, and perfect for any occasion. This recipe combines the tanginess of buttermilk with the natural sweetness of honey
Ingredients:
- 3 cups (360g) all-purpose flour (plus extra for kneading)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk (room temperature)
- 1/4 cup (60ml) honey
- 2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter, melted (plus extra for brushing)
- 1 large egg (room temperature)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, honey, melted butter, and egg until well combined.
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined. Do not overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.
Shape the Dough:
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently for about 1-2 minutes, just until the dough comes together and is smooth. Shape it into a loaf.
Bake:
- Place the dough into the prepared loaf pan. Brush the top with a little melted butter for a golden crust.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean.
Cool:
- Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
Tips:
If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make a substitute by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to 1 cup of milk and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes.
